Field Photography

Dion Manastyrski's assignment and field photography has involved travel to remote field locations throughout the Pacific Northwest. Scientific researchers, field-guide authors, advertisers or other publishers rely on him for creative high-quality images of wildlife, plants, landscapes, research activities, or industry. Ultra-closeup photos of the tiniest insects, fungi, plants or inanimate objects can be taken under practically any circumstance. Aerial photography from a helicopter or small plane may be required to illustrate damage caused by insects on a larger scale, or to obtain a perspective not available from the ground.

For each of the projects he takes on, Dion assembles a collection of special gear that has been tailored over the years to meet a variety of creative and technical needs. This includes an elaborate system he developed for macro photography of live insects in the field, and special tilt-shift lenses that bring many of the capabilities of the view camera to 35mm photography. Mobile windbreaks, backdrops and lighting can be set up in the field to create more controlled conditions.

All gear and lenses have been carefully selected for sharpness and the highest image quality. Additional travel gear often includes a survival kit of necessities for unexpected wilderness complications, and tools and components for engineering special equipment on-the-fly.

Dion has completed courses in St. John's First Aid, wilderness survival, rock climbing, and WCB training in the use of chain saws. Field trips usually involve a combination of on-site photography and collection of live samples for the lab and studio.
